Dust Of Dryness, But For Fire

Sands of Suspended Conflagration

A small pouch, made from the hide of some red-scaled creature, contains several small translucent red spheres and a glass vial. The vial (approximately the size of a potion vial) contains red sand that sparkles in the light. The whole thing smells of a campfire, and is always warm to the touch.

The sparkling red special dust has many uses. If it is thrown into a fire, a volume of fire as large as a bonfire is instantly transformed to nothingness, and the sand becomes a translucent red sphere resting where it was thrown. If this sphere is hurled down, it breaks and releases the same volume of fire. This effect works only on non-magical fires.

Against magical fires, the dust works like dispel magic (CL 11th); successful or not, the sands are transformed into nothingness after being used in this way.

If the sands are employed against an elemental with the fire subtype, the creature must make a DC 18 Fortitude save or be destroyed. The sand deals 5d6 points of damage to the creature even if its saving throw succeeds.

Cost: 850gp; Moderate transmutation; CL 11th; Craft Wondrous Item, Control Flames or Wall of Fire

BEHIND THE SCENES:

Nothing more embarrassing than thinking up some cool homebrew creation, passing it out to the PCs, and then not having technical rules for it ready to go when they try to use it. That’s the story of this item, which I’ve now happily concluded. So as always, take these stats and use ’em or change ’em or whatever.

Enjoy!
