Stolen Aquatic Items Once More

Spinyofdoom keeps bringing it with the aquatic-themed items, and I keep fleshing them out and turning them into legitimate, functional (perhaps desirable?) magic items (I hope).

Here is the first aquatic item we stole.

Here is the second one.

New Specific Weapon: The Captain’s Reel

This fine harpoon features a long, barbed golden tip, and a golden figurehead lady on its handle. Made of polished brass and fine stained oak, this weapon looks almost as much like a grand sailing ship as a weapon. Trailing behind the harpoon is a length of very fine but virtually-unbreakable mithral chain. A miniature gold-inlaid anchor of adamantine is attached to the other end of the chain.

This +1 Bane (Aquatic)* Harpoon of Throwing and Distance also provides magical aid to the wielder when reeling in an opponent.

*Unlike normal Bane weapons, The Captain’s Reel deals it’s extra damage to all creatures with the aquatic sub-type.

When thrown, the chain portion (as strong as normal mithral chain, despite it’s size) magically extends up to the maximum range of the weapon. If it successfully impales itself in a target, it begins to automatically yank them in. At this point the user may choose to set the anchor, letting the Captain’s Reel do all the work, or hold fast and haul in the quarry yourself.

Set the Anchor: When a command word is spoken, the anchor portion fixes itself in space as an Immovable RodWith a second command word, it begins to retract at a rate of 10 feet per round (opposed Strength check against Strength 25 negates). The user can end either effect at any time by speaking the appropriate command word a second time.

Hold Fast: The wielder can spend a standard action (provoking Attacks of Opportunity) to reel in the target themselves, increasing the speed to 20 feet per round, or stopping the reel-in by another command word (technically a non-action that can only happen on your turn).

As normal for a harpoon, this weapon deals it’s damage each round a target spends impaled. Impaled creatures are considered Grappled. Ripping it loose requires a DC: 18 Strength Check, also dealing the weapon’s damage whether the attempt is successful or not.

Created by a powerful sea-wizard for a whaling captain gone mad, it is said that this first owner died in a hunt for a rare and aggressive sea-beast of some sort. According to the legend, the Captain’s Reel was lost at sea following his death, only resurfacing when it senses the presense of another person driven mad with obsession. Some say it is the corrupt soul of the Captain’s Reel’s owner that lends it power.

Cost: 50,310gp Moderate (various Schools) CL 15, Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Animate Objects, Clairaudience/clairvoyance, Magic Stonecreator must have a favored enemy with the Aquatic sub-type.

Enjoy!
